Gmail is one of the PWAs (Progressive Web Apps) for Google. Pinning Gmail to the taskbar on Chrome should be easier, but that is not the case. You still need to create a Gmail shortcut on the desktop first and then pin it to the taskbar. Here is how:
Step 1. Open Google Chrome and go to Gmail.
Step 2. Click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner, and go to More Tools > Create Shortcut.
Step 3. Tick the box Open as Windows, and click Create. An email icon will appear on your desktop.
Step 4. Right-click on the shortcut newly created on the desktop, and choose Pin to Taskbar.
Adding Gmail to the taskbar on Firefox is easier than that on Chrome. This method doesn’t guarantee 100% success, but it works most of the time.
Step 1. Go to Firefox and log in to Gmail.
Step 2. Resize the Firefox window so that the Firefox and computer’s desktop are on the same screen.
Step 3. Find the padlock icon, which is on the left of the address bar.
Step 4. Click on the padlock icon, hold your mouse, and don’t let it go. Drag to the desktop.
Step 5. An email icon will appear. Right-click to rename the icon.
This shortcut can’t be moved to the taskbar. It can only stay on your desktop. However, it shouldn’t be a big problem.
Microsoft Edge users won’t receive any security updates. Support for the legacy version of the Microsoft Edge desktop app ended as early as March 9, 2021. In case you are a die-hard fan of Microsoft Edge, here is how to add Gmail to the taskbar on Microsoft Edge.
Step 1. Go to the Gmail sign-in page with Microsoft Edge.
Step 2. Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner. In the dropdown menu, choose Pin this page to the taskbar or Pin this page to Start. Both of them will do.
There is no big difference between pinning Gmail to the taskbar and pinning Gmail to the start menu. The taskbar is the line of icons at the bottom of the computer screen. The start menu is hidden under the Windows icon. Add the Gmail shortcut to wherever you like.
Mac has a completely different operating system from Windows. The steps to pin Gmail to the taskbar on Mac are not that much different from that on Windows.
Step 1. Use your Mac to log in to your Gmail account.
Step 2. Click on the three vertical dots next to the Gmail profile icon in the top right corner.
Step 3. Go to More Tools > Create Shortcut.
Step 4. Name your shortcut, and tick the box of Open as a window. Click on Create.
Now, you have pinned Gmail to the taskbar. However, the Gmail icon will only stay when the browser is on. If you want to keep the Gmail icon on the taskbar permanently, right-click on it, and select Options > Keep in Dock.
Chromebooks are laptops running Chrome OS. It is not an arduous task to pin Gmail to taskbar on Chromebook. Follow the steps below.
Step 1. Use your Chromebook and visit Gmail.
Step 2. Click on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner, and go to More Tools > Create Shortcut.
Step 3. Rename your shortcut if necessary and then click Create.
Step 4. Right-click on the shortcut on the taskbar, choose New Window, and select New tab or New Window.
You might notice that the shortcut is not the Gmail icon you usually see or you just don’t like the Gmail icon. Most people want to change that. Luckily, there is a way to customize the Gmail shortcut in the taskbar.
Step 1. Search for the Gmail icon on Google and download it to your computer directly. Not all Gmail icons will do. The icon has to be in .ico format. The resolution has to be 256*256.
Step 2. Right-click on the shortcut. Choose Properties > Change Icon.
Step 3. Click on Browse, and find the Gmail icon you downloaded. Choose OK.
Now, your Gmail shortcut has a brand new look.
If you removed the Gmail shortcut from the desktop by mistake, you can do as mentioned above to create a Gmail shortcut again. Go to the Gmail website, click on the three vertical dots > More Tools > Create Shortcut. Check the Box of Open as Window.
Right-click on your desktop, and select New Shortcut. Type in www.gmail.com, and enter Gmail as the shortcut name. You now have created a shortcut for your Gmail.
